GIS is any system that captures, stores, analyzes, manages, and presents data that are linked to location(s). In the simplest terms, GIS is the merging of cartography, statistical analysis, and database technology. Therefore, in a general sense, the term describes any information system that integrates, stores, edits, analyzes, shares, and displays geographic information for informing decision making. GIS applications are tools that allow users to create interactive queries (user-created searches), analyze spatial information, edit data, maps, and present the results of all these operations. A GIS integrates hardware, software, and data for capturing, managing, analyzing, and displaying all forms of geographically referenced information. It allows us to view, understand, question, interpret, and visualize data in many ways that reveal relationships, patterns, and trends in the form of maps, globes, reports, and charts. A GIS helps you answer questions and solve problems by looking at your data in a way that is quickly understood and easily shared. RMA uses aerial photography, topographic images, soils delineations, land cover, GPS points, and any other type of spatial data that we can generate or obtain to illustrate to landowners any particular characteristic or attribute that landowners may have a question or concern about. We can use GIS to show a landowner the assets, resources' and unique features of their properties. We develop and maintain customized ownership data including deed and plat book references, real estate taxes, acreages of various land cover types, soils, assessed and appraisal values and produce a variety of customized management reports and plans. RMA also utilizes Global Positioning System (GPS) Unit with sub-meter accuracy to locate important physical features that may be present including forest roads, ditches, wetland and sensitive environmental areas. A GPS device uses satellites to precisely locate positions and areas that can then be incorporated as a data layer into our GIS system for enhanced mapping capabilities. Each of these data layers of information can then be overlaid and displayed on aerial photographs to create, analyze and present management information.
